Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater
Community Classes, Pre-professional and Apprentice Program Proposal
Artistic Director, Oluyinka Akinjiola
Oluyinka Akinjiola, Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater and North Star Ballroom are teaming up to present a community class series, pre-professional and Apprentice program to serve North Portland communities. The program goal is to increase accessibility to dance and cultural art forms from the African Diaspora, build community through interaction and participation, professional development for young artists, and to create a safe community space for youth and adults.
Afterschool Classes – Oluyinka Akinjiola and members of Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater will offer a series of classes focusing on dances of the African Diaspora. Classes will focus on techniques and fusions between Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Contemporary, Capoeira, Hip Hop, House, Jazz, and Brazilian Samba. Classes are ages 12 and above, $8-$12 sliding scale per class. Financial assistance is available to students of participating schools and organizations.
Maximum Capacity: 35 students

Classes time: 4-5:15
Pre-Professional Program (Ages 16 and up)
Selected intermediate/advanced dancers from Afterschool and Community classes will be invited to join the Pre-Professional program. Dancers in the Pre-Professional program will receive additional training for performance opportunities with Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater. The program is free of charge. Dancers will rehearse with Rejoice immediately following the afterschool class from 5:30-6:15. Talented dancers between 13-15 years old will be considered.
Apprentice Program (Ages 18 and up)
Selected pre-professional and professional dancers will be invited to be Apprentices with Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater. Apprentices will rehearse with Rejoice company members, learn repertory and experience the creative process for new choreography.
Participation School/Organization contribution and/or development support
$250 contribution covers 10-12 students for 5 community classes, space rental and instruction costs. Presence of school or organization member is needed initially at afterschool classes.
